In the northwest of Peru, in the Piura Region, sits the city of Talara. As of 2017, there were 91,444 people living there. It is a port city on the Pacific Ocean. It has a hot, dry climate. Talara housed a US air base during World War II as a result of its oil deposits and capacity to produce aviation fuel. It served as one of the Pacific Fleet's two refuelling facilities. On the hills were naval cannons, and near the harbour were submarine nets. Three British destroyers—the Ajax, Achilles, and Exeter—refueled there on their way around the Horn to Rio de la Plata to catch the Graf Spee. There is a sizable fishing fleet based in Talara. The Cap. FAP Vctor Montes Arias Airport provides air service to the city.
