The capital of West Papua, an Indonesian province, is Sorong. The city's only land borders are with Sorong Regency, which is situated on the westernmost point of the island of New Guinea. It serves as the entry point to Indonesia's Raja Ampat Islands, a region of coral reef islands with a diversity of species that is said to be the centre of coral reef biodiversity worldwide. Additionally, it serves as a logistics hub for the booming eastern oil and gas frontier of Indonesia. Since 2010, Sorong has grown rapidly, and more expansion is expected as it is connected by road to other frontier towns in Papua's Bird's Head Peninsula. The city had 190,625 residents as of the 2010 Census; the most recent estimate is 254,294. Domine Eduard Osok Airport serves the area.
