Sokodé is the second largest city in Togo and seat of the Tchaoudjo and Centrale Region in the center of the country, 339 kilometres (211 mi) north of Lomé. The city, which had a population of 86,500 in 2004 but is now closer to 189,000, is located between the Mo and Mono rivers and serves as a commercial hub for the nearby agricultural districts. Although it is a metropolis with many different ethnic groups and religions, Islam predominates. The bulk of Kotokolis reside there, together with Muslims wearing attire typical of North Africa, and it serves as an administrative hub. Both men and women have been known to wear large boubous or veils over gorgeously coloured clothing.
