The city of Sukhumi or Sokhumi, sometimes called by its Abkhaz name Aqwa, is situated in a large bay on the eastern shore of the Black Sea. The Republic of Abkhazia, which has had power over it since the Abkhazia War in 1992–1993 is both its capital and largest city.
