Sarawak's central area contains the inland city of Sibu. It serves as the Sibu District's capital in Sarawak, Malaysia's Sibu Division. The city has a total size of 129.5 square kilometres (50.0 square miles) and is situated on the island of Borneo. It is located at the confluence of the Rajang and Igan Rivers, some 60 kilometres from the South China Sea and approximately 191.5 kilometres (119 mi) north-east of the state capital Kuching. Most of the population of Sibu is of Chinese ethnicity, primarily from Fuzhou. Other ethnic groups such as Iban, Malay and Melanau are also present, but unlike other regions of Sarawak, they are not as significant. The city had 162,676 residents as of 2010.
