One of the four municipalities under direct administration in the People's Republic of China is Shanghai. The Huangpu River flows through the city, which is situated on the Yangtze River's southern estuary. Shanghai is the most populated urban area in China and the most populous city proper in the world, with a population of 24.89 million as of 2021. The GDP of this city is higher than the GDP of any other city in East Asia. Suzhou, Wuxi, Nantong, Ningbo, Jiaxing, Zhoushan, and Huzhou are all part of the Greater Shanghai metropolitan area, which as of 2018 was predicted to have a nominal gross metropolitan product of close to 9.1 trillion RMB. The Port of Shanghai is the busiest container port in the world, and Shanghai has long been one of the key centres for banking, business and economics, research, education, science and technology, industry, tourism, culture, cuisine, art, fashion, sports, and transportation. One of the two international airports servicing the Shanghai metropolitan region, along with Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport ranked among the top 10 busiest airports in the world by passenger traffic in 2019.
