The largest city in the Tohoku area and the second largest city north of Tokyo is Sendai, the capital of Miyagi Prefecture. The city, one of Japan's 20 designated cities, had 1,091,407 residents living in 525,828 homes as of 1 June 2020. The daimy Date Masamune built the city in 1600. It is known as the "City of Trees" because zelkova trees can be found lining several of the principal streets, including Jzenji Street and Aoba Street. The largest Tanabata festival in Japan, the Sendai Tanabata Festival, takes place in the summer. For the Pageant of Starlight, which lasts through much of December, the trees are decorated with thousands of lights throughout the winter.
