Sahuayo is a city in the western Mexican state of Michoacán, close to Lake Chapala's southern side. The nearby municipality of the same name uses it as its municipal seat. Sahuayo is a significant industrial and commercial hub for the Chapala Lake region, with a focus on handicrafts, Sahuayense-made hats (sombreros), and sandals (huaraches). The largest huarache in the entire world, measuring 7.45 metres long and 3.09 metres wide, is found there. Given the concentration of notable poets, authors, and artists who lived there, Michoacán—whose name means "turtle-shaped pot"—has been referred to as the Athens of Mexico. It serves as Arts Propositions Association's present headquarters. In 2005, 59,316 people were counted in the census, and 61,965 people lived in the municipality. The municipality has a surface area of 128.05 km2.
