Sagaing is the former capital of the Sagaing Region of Myanmar. It is situated on the opposite bank of the Irrawaddy River, 20 kilometres (12 miles) southwest of Mandalay. Sagaing is a significant religious and monastic centre with many Buddhist monasteries. The various hills along the ridge that runs parallel to the river are crowded with pagodas and monasteries. A series of covered staircases leading up the 240 m (790 ft) hill leads to the Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda, which serves as the centre of the complex.
