Port Moresby, also referred to as Pom City or simply Moresby, is the capital and largest city of Papua New Guinea. It is one of the biggest cities outside of Australia and New Zealand in the southwestern Pacific. It is situated on the south-western coast of the Papuan Peninsula of the island of New Guinea, along the coasts of the Gulf of Papua. In the latter half of the 19th century, the city began to flourish as a commercial hub. In order to cut off Australia from Southeast Asia and the Americas during World War II, it was a top target for annexation by the Imperial Japanese Army during 1942 and 1943.
