Pinghu is a county-level city in the east of Jiaxing's administrative area, in the northeast of Zhejiang Province, bordering Shanghai to the northeast. It is situated close to both the North Shore of Hangzhou Bay and the East China Sea. Pinghu was a component of Haiyan County prior to the Ming Dynasty. Pinghu County was founded in 1430. Pinghu was incorporated as a county-level city in 1991 and is now governed by Jiaxing, a prefecture-level city.
