Petrópolis, sometimes referred to as The Imperial City, is a municipality in Brazil's Southeast. It is situated 68 kilometres (42 miles) northeast of Rio de Janeiro, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The population of Petrópolis municipality increased from 286,537 at the time of the previous census to 295,917 according to the 2010 National Brazilian Census. The city not only dominates the Fluminense Mountain Region in terms of size and population, but it also has the highest GDP and HDI in the area. Petrópolis is considered the safest city in the state of Rio de Janeiro and the sixth safest city in Brazil, according to IPEA classification for medium and large cities.
