The capital of the Ohrid Municipality is the city of Ohrid in North Macedonia. The municipality had more than 42,000 residents as of 2002, making it the eighth-biggest city in the nation and the largest city on Lake Ohrid. Ohrid has been called the "Jerusalem of the Balkans" and was formerly home to 365 churches, one for every day of the year. The city is full of charming homes and historical landmarks, and tourism is the main industry. It is situated west of Resen and Bitola and southwest of Skopje. Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were recognised by UNESCO as Cultural and Natural World Heritage Sites in 1979 and 1980, respectively. There are only 28 sites in the UNESCO World Heritage list that are both cultural and natural, and Ohrid is one of them.
