The administrative centre of the Nagapattinam District is located in the town of Nagapattinam in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. During the Chola era of mediaeval India, the town rose to prominence and became a key harbour for trade and eastward-bound naval operations. An significant Buddhist building at the time was the Chudamani Vihara in Nagapattinam, built by the Srivijayan king Sri Mara Vijayattungavarman of the Sailendra dynasty with the aid of Rajaraja Chola I. The Portuguese and then the Dutch settled Nagapattinam, and from 1660 until 1781 it was the seat of Dutch Coromandel. The town was taken over by the British East India Company in November 1781. From 1799 to 1845, it served as the Tanjore district's capital for the British Madras Presidency. In Independent India, it remained a part of the Thanjavur district. It became the administrative centre of the recently established Nagapattinam District in 1991. 102,905 people called Nagapattinam home as of 2011. It is administered by a Special grade municipality and has an area of 17.92 km2 (6.92 sq mi).
