The capital and largest city of Oman is Muscat. The Governorate of Muscat is headquartered there. The National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) estimates that as of September 2018, there were 1.4 million people living in the Muscat Governorate. The metropolitan region, which encompasses six provinces known as wilayats, is around 3,500 km2 (1,400 sq mi) in size. Muscat has had different periods of foreign and indigenous authority throughout its history, including the Persians, the Portuguese Empire, the Iberian Union, and the Ottoman Empire. Muscat has been known as a major commercial port between the west and the east from the early first century AD. In the 18th century, Muscat was a regional military power whose influence reached as far as East Africa and Zanzibar. Muscat drew foreign traders and settlers from other countries, like the Persians and the Balochis, as an important port city in the Gulf of Oman. Muscat has rapidly developed its infrastructure since Qaboos bin Said became Sultan of Oman in 1970, which has fueled the expansion of a thriving economy and a multiethnic culture. According to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, Muscat is a Beta - Global City.
