In Pembrokeshire, Wales, Milford Haven is both a town and a community. It is located on the northern side of the Milford Haven Waterway, a natural harbour formed by an estuary that has been utilised as a port since the Middle Ages. Sir William Hamilton, who created a grid pattern for the town, founded it in 1790. Although it was initially intended to be a whaling centre, by 1800 it had evolved into a Royal Navy dockyard, where it stayed until the dockyard was moved to Pembroke in 1814. After Esso built an oil refinery, it turned into a commercial dock, with the 1960s seeing a shift in emphasis to fuel oil and liquid gas logistics. With many oil refineries and one of the largest LNG terminals in the world, the town's port continued to play a significant role in the United Kingdom's energy sector by 2010, rising to the fourth largest port in terms of tonnage in the country.
