At roughly 52°03′N 29°15′E, Mazyr is a city in the Gomel Region of Belarus on the Pripyat River, about 210 kilometres east of Pinsk and 100 kilometres northwest of Chernobyl. Inhabitants number 111,770. There are 150,000 people living in the urban area as a whole, including the town of Kalinkavichy across the river. Mazyr is renowned in Belarus as a hub for food processing, machine construction, salt extraction, and oil refining. One of Belarus's biggest oil refineries, which produces 18 million metric tonnes of oil annually and is connected by a tram line, is located there. Crude oil from Russia travels through the Druzhba pipeline, which divides in two at Mazyr. Poland and Ukraine are served by separate pipeline branches.
