The capital and second-most populated city of the Philippines is Manila, also referred to as the City of Manila. The most densely populated city proper in the world as of 2019 is one that is heavily urbanised. The Philippine Commission Act 183 on July 31, 1901 identified it as the first chartered city in the nation. Republic Act No. 409, "The Revised Charter of the City of Manila," was passed on June 18, 1949, granting it autonomy. Because its commercial networks were the first to cross the Pacific Ocean and connect Asia with the Spanish Americas through the galleon trade, Manila is regarded as one of the original group of global cities along with Mexico City and Madrid. When this feat was accomplished, it marked the first time in world history that an uninterrupted chain of trade routes circling the planet had been established. Despite being one of the most populated and rapidly expanding cities in Southeast Asia, Manila is the capital city of Southeast Asia with the second-highest number of natural disasters behind Tokyo.
