The smallest and most densely inhabited of New York City's five boroughs is Manhattan, also known locally as The City. With New York County, one of the founding counties in the U.S. state of New York, it forms the urban core of the New York metropolitan region. The city's economic and administrative hub, cultural symbol, and place of origin are all located in Manhattan. The majority of the borough is made up of Manhattan Island, which is bordered by the Hudson, East, and Harlem rivers as well as a few little neighbouring islands like Roosevelt, U Thant, Randalls, and Wards Islands. In addition, Manhattan has Marble Hill, a small neighbourhood that is currently located on the American mainland but was once an island connected to the Bronx by the Harlem Ship Canal. Lower, Midtown, and Upper Manhattan are the three formally defined sections of Manhattan Island that each straddle the borough's long axis.
