In the German state of Saxony, Leipzig is the city with the most population. As of 2021, it outnumbered Dresden as the capital of the Saxony, ranking seventh in terms of population in Germany and second in terms of population in the region of the former East Germany, behind (East) Berlin. The city joins the polycentric Leipzig-Halle Conurbation with Halle (Saale), the major city in the neighbouring state of Saxony-Anhalt. Leipzig/Halle Airport is located midway between the two cities.
