A city and municipality in the Dutch province of South Holland is called Leiden. Leiden's municipality has 119,713 residents, but the city and its 206,647-person suburbs Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten, and Zoeterwoude comprise one closely integrated urban area. The Leiden urban agglomeration has a total population of 270,879 according to the Netherlands Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Teylingen, Noordwijk, and Noordwijkerhout are also included in the broader Leiden urban region, bringing the total population to 348,868. On the Oude Rijn, Leiden is situated about 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of The Hague and about 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Amsterdam. Just northeast of Leiden is the Kaag Lakes (Kagerplassen) leisure area.
