A town called Lachin or Berdzor is located in the vital Lachin Corridor, which connects Armenia and the contentious Nagorno-Karabakh territory. As a result of the ceasefire agreement that put an end to the Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, it is now under the control of the Russian peacekeeping army. Since 1992, the town has been administered as part of the breakaway Republic of Artsakh's Kashatagh Province and is the de jure administrative centre of the Lachin District of Azerbaijan.
