In the Canary Islands, Spain, on the island of Tenerife, in the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is the city and municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The city is the second most populous on the island and the third most populous city in the entire archipelago. In 1999, UNESCO designated the historic district of La Laguna as a World Heritage Site. The town began an extensive Urban Plan to revitalise this neighbourhood in 2003, which was carried out by the company AUC S.L. The area was once home to the Canary Islands' capital. Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna are directly adjacent, forming a single, enormous metropolitan core that is connected by tram.
