Kure is a port city and a significant centre for shipbuilding located on the Seto Inland Sea in the Japanese prefecture of Hiroshima. Kure is home to the second-oldest naval dockyard in Japan and continues to be a significant base for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), known as JMSDF Kure Naval Base. Kure has a rich industrial and naval history. A population density of 646 people per km2 and an estimated population of 228,030 were recorded in the city as of May 1, 2015. There are 352.80 km2 in total.
