The city of Kokshetau is located in northern Kazakhstan and serves as the administrative centre of the Akmola Region, which encircles Lake Kopa's southern coast and is bordered by the Kokshetau Uplands to the north and the Ishim Steppe to the south. It bears the name Mount Kokshe. Earlier, before the Kokshetau Region was dissolved in 1997, it served as the region's administrative hub. Additionally, it is located where the South Siberian and Trans-Kazakhstan trains converge. Kokshetau is located at a height of around 234 metres (768 feet) above sea level.
