At an elevation of 1,010 m (3,310 ft), Kandahar is a city in Afghanistan that is situated on the Arghandab River in the southern part of the nation. With a population of roughly 614,118, it is Afghanistan's second-largest city after Kabul. It serves as both the de facto capital of the Taliban and the provincial capital of Kandahar, also known as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Additionally, it serves as the geographic and cultural hub of the broader Loy Kandahar region. Mirwais Hotak established the area as a separate kingdom in 1709 and made Kandahar the centre of the Hotak dynasty. Kandahar became the seat of the Afghan Empire in 1747 during the rule of Ahmad Shah Durrani, founder of the Durrani dynasty.
