The Japanese prefecture of Fukushima is home to the city of Iwaki. Iwaki has a population of 337,765 people as of 1 April 2020, living in 143,500 homes, for a density of 270 people per km2. The city is the largest in the prefecture and the tenth largest city in Japan in terms of area, with a total area of 1,232.02 square kilometres (475.69 sq mi). Iwaki is one among the increasing number of cities with hiragana names and is also a core city. Beginning on October 1, 1966, the current Iwaki City was formed by the union of 14 minor municipalities. The Taira Tanabata Festival is held in Iwaki every year from August 6–8.
