Iquique, the capital of both the Tarapacá Region and the Iquique Province, is a port city and commune in northern Chile. It is located on the Pacific coast, west of the Atacama Desert's Pampa del Tamarugal. 191,468 people were counted there in the 2017 census. The primary commune of Greater Iquique is located there. The settlement grew during the 19th century era of saltpetre mining in the Atacama Desert. It was once a Peruvian city with a sizable Chilean population before Chile took control of it during the Pacific War (1879–1883 ). The other free port in Chile is Punta Arenas, which is located in the extreme south of the country.
