In the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, there is a city named Igarassu. It is the second-oldest city in the nation and is located about 32 kilometres (20 miles) north of the Recife metropolitan area. It stands as one of the earliest European settlements in Brazil and is the site of the oldest church in the country, the Church of Saints Cosme and Damião, built in 1535. Numerous historic buildings from the colonial era may be found in Igarassu. The National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) declared the city's historic core as a national monument in 1972.
