Huaraz is a city in Peru that was initially known as San Sebastián de Huaraz. It serves as both the administrative centre for Huaraz Province and the capital of the Ancash Region. The districts of Huaraz and Independencia include the majority of the inhabitants of the urban area. The city is situated on the right bank of the Santa River, in the centre of the Callejon de Huaylas valley. The city is located at a height of around 3050 metres above sea level. With a built-up area of 8 km2 and a population of 120,000, Huancayo is the largest city in the central Peruvian Andes, followed by Huancayo. The city is the 22nd biggest in Peru. The cathedral and the episcopal residence for the province are both located in Huaraz.
