The eastern portion of the Mexican state of Tlaxcala is home to the small city of Huamantla, which is part of Huamantla Municipality. Although the city was not created until the early colonial period, in the 1530s, the region has a lengthy indigenous history. Although it is mostly an agricultural region, it is best known for its yearly adoration of the Virgin Mary statue known as Our Lady of Charity. This includes a month of festivities, the best known of which are the “night no one sleeps” when residents create six km of “carpets” on the streets made from colored sawdust, flowers and other materials. The second is the "Huamantlada," which is a bullrun akin to that in Pamplona.
