Gyumri, an urban municipal community and the second-largest city in Armenia, is located in the northwest of the country and serves as the administrative hub for Shirak Province. When the city was known as Alexandropol at the end of the 19th century, it was one of the biggest in Russian-ruled Eastern Armenia and had a population akin to Yerevan. During the Soviet era, it was given the new name of Leninakan. Before being completely destroyed by the 1988 Spitak earthquake, the city's population had risen to 200,000. The city's population dropped from 150,917 in the 2001 census to 121,976 in the 2011 census.
