Makhanda, often referred to as Grahamstown, is a town in South Africa's Eastern Cape region with a population of about 140,000. It is located roughly 130 km (80 mi) southwest of East London and 110 km (70 mi) northeast of Gqeberha. The municipal council meets in the town of Makhanda, which is the largest in the Makana Local Municipality. The South African Library for the Blind (SALB), a diocese of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, Rhodes University, the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court, and the 6 South African Infantry Battalion are also located there. The famed Waterloo Farm, the only estuary fossil site in the world from 360 million years ago with excellent soft-tissue preservation, is also around 3 km south-east of the town.
