A city and municipality in northwest Spain is called Gijón or Xixón. By population, it is the biggest municipality and city in the Asturian autonomous community. It is situated in the central-northern region of Asturias, on the Cantabrian Sea coast in the Bay of Biscay; it is roughly 26 kilometres (15 mi) from Avilés and 24 km (15 mi) northeast of Oviedo, the regional capital. Gijón, which has 271,780 inhabitants, is Spain's fifteenth-largest city.
