The Thüringer Städtekette, an almost straight line of cities made up of the six largest Thuringian cities, runs from Eisenach in the west, via Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, and Jena to Gera in the east. With about 93,000 residents, Gera is the third-largest city in Thuringia after Erfurt and Jena. It is also the easternmost city of the Thüringer Städtekette. Along with Plauen, Greiz, and Weida, Gera is the largest city in the Vogtland and one of its historical capitals. The city is located in the East Thuringian Hill Country, in the expansive White Elster Valley, between Leipzig and Greiz (upstream) (downstream). Gera is situated in the Central German Metropolitan Region, roughly 60 kilometres south of Leipzig, the main city in Saxony, 80 kilometres east of Erfurt, 120 kilometres west of Dresden, and 90 kilometres north of Hof, the largest city in Bavaria (Saale).
