The city of General Roca is located in northern Patagonia, in the Argentine province of Rio Negro. On September 1, 1879, during the Conquest of the Desert, Colonel Lorenzo Vintter formed it at the request of War Minister Julio A. Roca. Fiske Menuco, which translates to "deep water," was the name given to the initial settlement site by the local Mapuche population. It had to be rebuilt 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) to the northwest on higher ground after being completely destroyed in 1899 by floods of the Rio Negro.
