On the north bank of the St. Lawrence River in Prescott, Ontario, there is a historic military bastion called Fort Wellington National Historic Site. The Dominion Parks Commission, the forerunner to Parks Canada, received the site in 1923 after being utilised by the British Army, the Canadian militia, and the militia for the majority of the 19th and 20th centuries. In January 1920, the fort was first designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.
