East Asian island nation Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), is situated. The majority of the nation's land is occupied by Taiwan, whose largest island was historically referred to as Formosa in Western literature. The main island located about 180 kilometres (112 miles) across the Taiwan Strait from the southeast coast of the People's Republic of China. It is 35,808 square kilometres (13,826 sq mi) in size (PRC). The island is bordered to the north by the East China Sea, to the east by the Philippine Sea, to the south by the Luzon Strait, and to the southwest by the South China Sea. The ROC also controls a number of smaller islands, including the Penghu archipelago in the Taiwan Strait, the Kinmen and Matsu Islands near the PRC's coast, and some of the South China Sea Islands.
