Ethiopia's capital city is Debre Birhan. The town has an elevation of 2,840 metres, making it the highest town of this size in Africa. It is situated in the Semien Shewa Zone of the Amhara Region, some 120 kilometres north-east of Addis Abeba on Ethiopian Highway 2. It served as Ethiopia's first capital and later, along with Ankober and Angolalla, one of the Shewa kingdom's capitals. Today, it serves as the Semien Shewa Zone's administrative hub in the Amhara Region.
