North Rhine-Bottrop Westphalia's is a city on the Rhine-Herne Canal in west-central Germany. Bottrop is close to Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck, and Dorsten and is situated in the Ruhr industrial region. The city has firms that make chemicals, textiles, machinery, and derivatives of coal tar. It was once a major rail and coal mining hub. Beginning in the 1860s, Bottrop developed as a mining hub. It was incorporated as a city in 1921 and destroyed during World War II's Oil Campaign. It united with the nearby towns of Gladbeck and Kirchhellen in 1975, but Gladbeck withdrew in 1976, causing Kirchhellen to become a district of Bottrop under the name Bottrop-Kirchhellen. Additionally, it has a twin in Blackpool, England.
