In Lancashire, England, there is a sizable town and coastal resort called Blackpool. It serves as the primary settlement for the borough commonly known as Blackpool, which is situated on the northwest coast of England. The town is situated on the Irish Sea, between the Ribble and Wyre rivers, and is located 40 miles (64 kilometres) northwest of Manchester and 27 miles (43 kilometres) north of Liverpool. Blackpool is the most populous settlement in Lancashire and the fifth-most populous in North West England, behind Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton, and Warrington, according to the 2011 census figures for the unitary authority and the urban settlement, respectively. The unitary authority of Blackpool is home to 139,720 people, while the urban settlement has 147,663 inhabitants. With a population of 239.409, the larger built-up area was the fifth-most populous urban area in the North West, behind the regions of Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, and Birkenhead. The Blackpool Tower, the highest structure in the British Empire when it was erected in 1894, is located there.
