In the southern Nepalese province of Madhesh, Birgunj is a major city. It lies 135 km (84 mi) south of the capital Kathmandu, attached in the north to Raxaul in the border of the Indian state of Bihar. Birgunj is referred to as the "Gateway of Nepal" since it serves as Patna's gateway to Nepal. The "Commercial Capital of Nepal" is another name for it. The town has significant economic importance for Nepal as most of the trade with India is via Birgunj and the Indian town of Raxaul. The Tribhuvan Highway connects Birgunj with Kathmandu, the nation's capital. One of the first three municipalities established under Prime Minister Mohan Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana's administration was Birgunj. On May 22, 2017, it was recognised as a metropolitan city alongside Biratnagar and Pokhara. One of Nepal's largest cities and the biggest in the province of Madhesh is Birgunj. The fifth-most populous city in the country is Birgunj.
