Biratnagar, a major city in Nepal, is the administrative centre of Province No. 1. It is the largest city in the province and serves as the administrative centre for the Morang district, with a population of 242,548 as of the 2011 Census. According to the preliminary census report for Nepal in 2021, Biratnagar's population is expected to be 244,750. It is one of the cities that make up the Greater Birat Development Area, which is primarily located on the Koshi Highway in Eastern Nepal and includes the cities of Biratnagar, Itahari, Gothgau, Biratchowk, and Dharan. The Greater Birat Development Area is estimated to have an overall urban population of 804,300 people living in 159,332 households. In the Indian state of Bihar, Biratnagar is situated 6 km (3.7 mi) north of the neighbouring town of Jogbani and 399 kilometres (248 mi) east of the capital, Kathmandu. Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, is located 174 kilometres (108 miles) north of the city.
