The largest city in Belize is Belize City, which was formerly the capital of the old British Honduras. There are 16,162 dwellings in Belize City, which has a population of 57,169 inhabitants, according to the 2010 census. It is located at the mouth of the Belize River's distributary Haulover Creek. On the Philip Goldson Highway along the Caribbean coast, the Belize River drains into the Caribbean Sea eight kilometres from Belize City. When Hurricane Hattie hit the coast in October 1961, the city was nearly completely destroyed. Up until the government moved to the new capital of Belmopan in 1970, it served as the seat of government for British Honduras.
