The ancient Babylonian Empire had two distinct empires that existed in the Mesopotamian region at the time, and Babylon served as their capital city. Between the 19th and 15th centuries BC and again between the 7th and 6th centuries BC, these two empires dominated the region. The city featured steep embankments to contain the river's seasonal floods because it was built along both banks of the Euphrates river. A clay tablet from Sargon of Akkad's Akkadian Empire reign has the earliest recorded mention of Babylon as a tiny hamlet. The ancient city's location is close to modern-day Baghdad. The settlement was last mentioned in documents in the 10th century AD, when it was known as the "little village of Babel."
