On the banks of Lake Awassa in the Great Rift Valley is the Ethiopian city of Hawassa. It is located 75 km (47 km) north of Dilla, 130 km (81 mi) east of Sodo, and 273 kilometres (170 mi) south of Addis Abeba through Bishoftu. The town serves as the Sidama Region's capital. It lies on the Trans-African Highway 4 Cairo-Cape Town and has a latitude and longitude of 7°3′N 38°28′E and an elevation of 1,708 meters (5,604 ft) above sea level. Its name is derived from a Sidamic word that refers to a large body of water.
