The city of Aurangabad is located in the Indian state of Maharashtra and is being officially renamed Sambhajinagar. It is the largest city in the Marathwada area and serves as the administrative centre of the Aurangabad district. Aurangabad, which has a population of 1,175,116, is the fifth-most populated urban region in Maharashtra and is situated on a hilly upland topography in the Deccan Traps. The city is renowned as a significant hub for the manufacture of artistic silk and cotton textiles. The city is home to a number of notable educational institutions, including Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. With nearby tourist attractions like the Ajanta and Ellora caves, both of which have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1983, the city is also a well-known hub for tourism. The Aurangabad Caves, Daulatabad Fort, Grishneshwar Temple, Jama Mosque, Bibi Ka Maqbara, Himayat Bagh, Panchakki, and Salim Ali Lake are a few additional tourist destinations. Since Aurangabad once had 52 gates, some of which are still standing, the city is known as the "City of Gates." Under India's flagship Smart Cities Mission, the Aurangabad Industrial City (AURIC) was designated as the nation's first greenfield industrial smart city in 2019.
