The capital and largest city of Eritrea is Asmara, also known as Asmera, which is located in the Central Region of the nation. At 2,325 metres (7,628 feet) above sea level, it is the sixth-highest capital in the world. The city is situated at the northernmost point of an escarpment that separates the Great Rift Valley in neighbouring Ethiopia from the Eritrean Highlands. Due to the city's well-preserved modernist architecture, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. There were between 100 and 1,000 people living on the Asmera site when it was initially inhabited in 800 BC. Four distinct villages united to live together peacefully after many periods of conflict, and the city was subsequently created in the 12th century AD. In the final years of the 19th century, Asmara, a city in Italy, became the capital of Eritrea.
