Western Syria's Hama Governorate is home to the city and district of Salamieh (Arabic: Salamieh). It's 45 kilometres northeast of Homs and 33 kilometres southeast of Hama. The city was the birthplace of the second Fatimid caliph al-Qa'im bi-Amr Allah, whose dynasty would eventually found Cairo, and the early administrative centre of his father Abdullah al-Mahdi Billah, who established the Fatimid Caliphate, earning it the moniker "mother of Cairo." The city is the birthplace of the poet Muhammad al-Maghut and a significant hub for the Shi'ite Nizari and Taiyabi Isma'ili Islamic schools. There are 66,724 people living in the city.
