About 160 kilometres east of Aleppo, on the northeast bank of the Euphrates River, is the Syrian city of Raqqa. The largest dam in Syria, the Tabqa Dam, is 40 kilometres to the east of it. From 2014 until 2017, it served as the Islamic State's administrative centre.
